Project Description

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Flagstaff – Cameron Hwy, US 89, Cameron, AZ, this $37 million project consisted of reconstructing US 89 and included earthwork, aggregate base, paving, new northbound and southbound bridges over the Little Colorado River, box culverts, pedestrian underpasses, drainage improvements, roundabout construction, major electrical improvements and miscellaneous concrete flatwork.

Vastco developed and maintained an excellent working relationship with the Navajo Nation and the surrounding Cameron community. The relationship was enhanced by open lines of communication and a high number of local job opportunities.

Major challenges on this project included: The overall height of the bridge, accomplishing 80′ column pours in a single pour with unusually high river flows making river bed access difficult. Maintaining traffic control and safe access to the traveling public on a major highway over the Little Colorado River. Removal of the existing bridge with the adjacent proximity of a utility bridge that supported a gas line that spanned the canyon.
